Easy Hikes In Kauai: Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is located near Poipu in south Kauai and is a perfect trail for a leisurely stroll. Start at Shipwreck Beach and hike along the coast of Kauai. Put this on your list of easy hikes in Kauai to complete, and read on for the full details.

Things to Know
- Reservations are NOT required to hike on the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, but parking might be a bit tricky, so it’s best to head here early in the morning if you plan to hike.
- This trail includes some steep cliff drop-offs, so be careful as you meander along the coast. Additionally, part of this trail is directly on the Poipu Bay Golf Course, so be aware of the risk of flying golf balls. Yup!
- Restrooms: There are restrooms located at Shipwreck Beach.
- Water: Bring plenty! Get our favorite water bladder here and ditch those plastic water bottles!
Easy Hikes In Kauai: Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail – 4.2 miles (or less) – easy, out and back
To get to the trail, start at Shipwreck Beach. To get there, take Poipu Road from Poipu until you reach The Grand Hyatt on the right. Don’t turn into the resort, but keep driving until you reach Ainako Street, and then turn right. Drive to the end of the road where you’ll find parking. Head toward the water to reach Shipwreck Beach.

To reach Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, head east at the beach (to the left if you are facing the beach). Here is where the trail begins. Be aware that there are many parallel trails and walkways through the brushy sandy beach. Just keep going and meander your way along the coastline.

Note that this hike is technically 4.2 miles out and back, but you can spend as much or as little time on this trail as you like. Turn around anytime you want! After hiking about 0.6 miles, the trail will narrow into a single track as you start to walk along the golf course.
From here it’s another 1.5 miles or so to the end of the trail. As you hike along the golf course, you will be rewarded with great views of the Kauai coast and the mountain backdrop on the golf course.
Eventually, you’ll reach the coastline trail again. Here there are numerous parallel trails that all head in the same direction, sort of like before the golf course. Just after this section, there are signs for Makauwahi Cave Reserve, but we don’t recommend visiting as this is a sacred area and is likely closed.
Just past this area is the turnaround point for the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail. Retrace your steps back to Shipwreck Beach and relax on the sand!

Final Thoughts
This was a very nice hike for a relaxing stroll after our previous harder hikes near Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park. It was nice to take it easy and enjoy the views along the coast. The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail should definitely be on your list of easy hikes in Kauai.
After hiking this trail, we actually headed back to our condo and then checked out Poipu Beach, which had some excellent snorkeling and swimming. In the evening, we enjoyed an amazing dinner cruise with Capt. Andy’s, which we highly recommend!
