7 Days in Maui Itinerary: Hiking, Beaches & Haleakalā

Planning a dream vacation to Maui? This 7 days in Maui itinerary covers the best the island has to offer, from watching the sunrise from the summit of a 10,000-foot dormant volcano to snorkeling with green sea turtles, driving the legendary Road to Hana, hiking through a bamboo forest, and ending the week with an authentic Hawaiian luau.

It’s hiking-heavy by design, because Maui rewards those willing to lace up their boots as much as those who just want to lie on a beach, and we think you should do both.

We spent 7 days on Maui in mid-June as part of a two-island trip to Hawaii and loved every minute of it. Haleakalā National Park alone is worth the flight. We visited four times over the week, and it never got old. Here’s exactly how to plan your own 7 day Maui itinerary, day by day.

Best Time for a 7 Day Maui Itinerary

🌺 Whenever you choose to visit Maui, please practice mālama. This means caring for and respecting others, supporting local businesses, and protecting the environment by not littering and picking up any trash that you see. Learn about the Hawaiian culture and pay it forward!

When is the best time to visit Maui? There really isn’t a bad time to visit! Depending on when you are planning to visit, it will either be the wet season or the dry season. The wet season runs from November through March during the winter months.

During this time, you may see more rainfall than the other months. Additionally, temperatures range from 65-80°F from November through March. Sometimes it even snows on Haleakalā!

The dry season runs from April through October in the spring and summer months. Dry season is considered the best time to visit Maui with sunny skies and warm temperatures averaging around 85F.

During this time, the weather is perfect for hiking, snorkeling, and lounging on the beaches. Due to the perfect conditions from April to October, it’s safe to say that you won’t be the only one visiting the island. Summer months are high season for visitation, so plan accordingly.

As always, no matter when you visit Maui, you should expect passing rain showers at all times. How else would you be able to experience those amazing rainbows all over the island?! We traveled here in mid-June. The weather was amazing. Sunny and 70F-90F all week, depending on the elevation.

Planning Your 7 Days in Maui

Getting There

Maui has one airport: Kahului Airport (OGG). Most visitors from the mainland connect through Honolulu or fly directly to Maui from West Coast hubs. Inter-island flights from Oahu take about 35 minutes, and the airport is centrally located about 30 minutes from both Kihei and Lahaina.

Things To Know

  • National Park Pass: there is only one national park on Maui, Haleakalā National Park. Visit our gear page to purchase your America the Beautiful Pass online at REI’s website. In some cases, you can purchase an annual pass at the entrance of some parks.
    • If you plan on watching the sunrise on Haleakalā, purchase your tickets online. This is a very popular attraction in Maui, so plan ahead and secure your tickets.
    • Sunrise reservations are available for booking 60 days and 2 days in advance at 7:00 am Hawaiian time. A reservation is required for each vehicle entering the park from 3:00 am – 7:00 am.
    • Bring some warm clothes! Temperatures at the summit of Haleakalā National Park are much colder than at sea level.
  • Bring plenty of sunscreen! If you are swimming in the ocean, make sure it’s reef-safe! 🐠 Please protect Hawaii’s amazing ecosystems!
  • Don’t forget to bring your own snorkel gear and a dry bag for beach days.
  • Bring bug spray and be prepared for mosquitoes. Our favorite is Bens30.
  • While visiting Hawaii, practice Leave No Trace.

Rental Car

Expert tip: We usually book our rental car super early as a pay later option. If you do this, you can continuously check the prices before your trip. If the price is lower than when you booked, cancel for free and rebook for the lower price! Most major rental car companies have free cancellation on pay later bookings but always check the fine print.

Make sure to take a video of the outside AND inside of the car before you leave the rental car lot. This will save you from any damage claims made by the rental car company after your return. We know from a very bad experience on this!

Lahaina Fire in 2023

The Lahaina fire in August 2023 devastated Maui’s historic west side, destroying much of the town, displacing residents, and becoming one of the deadliest wildfires in history. Beyond the physical damage, it deeply impacted the island’s cultural heart and local community, with rebuilding and recovery still ongoing.

Today, tourism in Maui is gradually recovering, but Lahaina remains largely closed or restricted. Visitors are encouraged to travel respectfully by supporting local businesses, avoiding affected areas, and being mindful that tourism plays a key role in the island’s recovery.

Reservations Needed

  • Haleakalā National Park: No reservations are needed to enter the park during normal hours, but an entrance fee is required.
    • To watch the sunrise, reserve and book your tickets 60 days in advance here. Be quick because these do sell out almost immediately!
  • Waianapanapa State Park: All non-residents must purchase parking and entry tickets. Each parking voucher is valid for one vehicle, and the number of entries corresponds to the total number of passengers in that vehicle. Reservations can be secured up to 30 days in advance online here.
  • Old Lahaina Luau: Reservations are required if you plan to attend this great evening event. Check out more information here.

Day 1 – Travel Day & Arrive in Maui

First up on your 7 days in Maui itinerary is to get to the beautiful islands! For us mainlanders, this includes a flight from the West Coast or farther! Depending on when your flight arrives in Maui, take this day to relax, acclimate to the time change, and prepare for your amazing week ahead.

We arrived in Maui later in the evening, around 6:30 pm, and did not have much time to explore or do anything else. We recommend heading to the grocery store, taking a fun tour, or just plain relaxing on the beach. Try to get to bed early because on day 2, it’s time to watch the sunrise on Haleakalā. This is a one-of-a-kind, amazing experience if you can secure tickets!

Speaking of Haleakalā, most Maui itineraries give Haleakalā one day. We give it four, because it deserves them!

Day 2 – Haleakalā Sunrise, Makawao Forest & Makena Cove

Turquoise waters at Makena Cove Secret Beach, Maui, Hawaii.
Beautiful Makena Cove

Get ready for a day full of amazing sights in Hawaii. First, get up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise on Haleakalā! We recommend doing this on the first morning because you won’t quite be on island time yet. It was much easier to get up early and get to the summit this way. Be sure to get your tickets early, because this is a super popular activity. Book your tickets 60 days in advance here.

🌄 Read our full post to get the details about the best hike and spot to watch the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park!

After the amazing sunrise, head down the mountain to Makawao. We recommend completing a short hike at the Mawakao Forest Reserve in a lush forest with beautiful wildflowers. Before that, it’s a perfect time to grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

🌳 Check out details on hiking in Makawao Forest Reserve here!

Maybe you’d rather relax on the beach? Head to the best beach on Maui! No, really, we think this is the most scenic beach on the island: Secret Beach. Also known as Makena Cove, get all the details on our post. Note that this is more of a rocky beach with a swimming hole.

Day 3 – Road to Hana, Wai’anapanapa & Pipiwai Trail

A path through the bamboo forest at Haleakala National Park, Kipahulu District.
The famous bamboo forest in Haleakalā National Park

Next, your ultimate 7 days in Maui itinerary will take you on a wild ride to Hana, completing the famous Road to Hana drive. There are multiple optional stops along the way here, but we recommend only a few of these stops due to time and crowds.

One of the must-see stops is Waianapanapa State Park. It’s truly breathtaking! Just make sure you pull to the side for any local drivers, and please be patient as you make your way along this scenic road.

🚗 Get all the details you need here for an epic Road to Hana day trip!

When you reach Hana, continue along the road until you reach the Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park. There, take an amazing hike on the Pipiwai Trail. Visit the amazing bamboo forest and end your hike at the gorgeous Waimoku Falls before returning to take a short hike to the Pools of Ohe’o.

Fair warning: the Road to Hana is spectacular but relentlessly crowded. We include it because the Pipiwai Trail at the end is non-negotiable, but if you’re only going for the drive itself, you might find it more stressful than scenic. Leave early, be patient, and keep your eyes on the prize at Kipahulu (Pipiwai Trail).

Day 4 – Haleakalā National Park: Sliding Sands Trail

Two hikers stand on the summit of Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii.

Spend some time during your 7 days in Maui at a dormant volcano! Get ready for some hard hiking in the summit district of Haleakalā at 10,000 feet. One of our favorite trails is the Keonehe’ehe’e Trail or Sliding Sands Trail.

This is a very strenuous trail leading from the summit of the volcano down into the crater! Let’s just hope that Haleakalā doesn’t decide to become active again during your hike!

➡️ Get your full guide on hiking the Sliding Sands trail here!

Hiking in Haleakalā is like being on another planet. You’ll even get to see some ofHaleakalā’s silverswords – they only grow here and atop Mauna Kea! Plan on spending the entire day doing this hike and exploring the summit – it is strenuous but worth it.

Day 5 – West Maui: Lahaina Pali Trail & Snorkeling

Next, spend your 5th day on Maui with a trip to the western side of the island for some amazing hikes and snorkeling! Start at the Laihaina Pali Trail. Then, visit the Nakalele Blowhole and the enchanted forest.

Lastly, head to a few of the best beaches in Maui and get ready for some world-class snorkeling. You may even get to see some of Maui’s amazing green sea turtles. They are so cute! Spend some time relaxing and enjoy dinner on the coast at a nearby restaurant. Find all the information on the 3 best snorkeling beaches in Maui. 🤿

Day 6 – Waihe’e Ridge Trail & ʻĪao Valley

Next, spend some time on the trails enjoying more hikes. Start your journey on the Waihe’e Ridge Trail. This is one of the more popular routes in Maui that has spectacular views along the entire trail. This hike gets very crowded, so be sure to arrive at the trailhead early.

After that, make a quick stop at the ʻĪao Valley State Monument and learn more about Hawaiian Culture. Finally, head to Kaanapali and enjoy the afternoon at the beach! We recommend spending some time at Black Rock Beach, which is great for snorkeling. This area is also a great place to have dinner along the coast.

🌴 Get the full details about visiting Waihe’e Ridge & ʻĪao Valley on our post here!

Day 7 – Halemau’u Trail & Old Lahaina Luau

The Holua Cabin in the clouds

Finally, your 7 days in Maui itinerary is coming to an end. Spend more time in Haleakalā National Park and complete another epic trail! This time, the Halemau’u Trail is your goal for the day.

This trail traverses through the jungle-like summit of Haleakalā and down into the crater again, using the rocky volcano walls as switchbacks on the way to the Holua Cabin. Overnight stays require a permit if you want to hike in and spend the night here in a volcano.

🌋 All you need to know and more about the Halemau’u Trail to plan your perfect hike.

Lastly, head to the famous Old Lahaina Luau! Be sure to come hungry because you will be served way too much food. Enjoy a feast and an evening of Hawaiian culture. We recommend this luau, but depending on where you are staying, your resort may also have one. If you are looking for other options, there are plenty!

Day 8 – Travel Day: Fly Home or Continue to Kauai

Finally, it’s time to head home. Spend your last day doing something fun, such as having breakfast or lunch on the beach before you leave gorgeous Maui.

Wait a minute, we have a better idea! Get on a plane to Kauai instead and spend another week on the breathtaking Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is a top spot for more hiking and nature! Be sure to stay tuned to find out which island we liked the best.

Where to Stay

There isn’t a bad place to stay while visiting Maui! We actually chose to stay in Upcountry, away from most of the popular tourist destinations. It was so peaceful and relaxing with outstanding views.

We really enjoyed our home base right near the entrance to Haleakalā National Park. Check out some of the options to stay in Upcountry, here.

If you want to be closer to the action, stay in Kihei or Lahaina. Here are some excellent options below:

Kihei’s best accommodations:

  • Maui Coast Hotel – best seller, white sand beaches just across the street, nearby dining & entertainment with a free shuttle.
  • Kohea Kai Hotel Maui – beachfront hotel 15 minutes from the airport, rooftop lounge, and nearby beaches!
  • Pineapple Inn – breakfast included and top-rated by travelers! Private rooms, gorgeous pool, and hot tub.
  • Aston Maui Hill – ocean views near Wailea offering spacious condos and nearby beaches and activities.

Here are some great properties to stay near and north of Lahaina:

  • Napili Kai Beach Resort – top-rated and far from the high-rise hotels, this resort is located on the shores of Napili Bay. Perfect for snorkelers and swimmers!
  • OUTRIGGER Kaanapali Beach Resort – oceanfront on the golden sands of Kaanapali Beach, one of the best in Maui! Premium rooms, upgraded features, and open-air dining.
  • Kaanapali Alii – looking for a bigger place to stay? Expansive one and two-bedroom condos await at the Kaanapali Alii.
  • The Mauian Hotel on Napili Beach – a beachside haven that will feel more like your home than a resort. Ocean views and beach access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Maui?

Seven days is genuinely the sweet spot for Maui. It’s enough time to experience Haleakalā multiple times, drive the Road to Hana, explore both West Maui and the beaches, and still have an evening for a luau without feeling rushed. We packed a lot into our 7 days and came away wishing we had one or two more.

What is the best area to stay in Maui for 7 days?

It depends on your priorities. Kihei is centrally located with great beach access and easy proximity to Haleakalā. This is our top recommendation for most visitors. Lahaina puts you closer to West Maui activities and the famous Kaanapali Beach. We actually stayed Upcountry, which was peaceful and quiet with stunning views. We were much closer to Haleakalā, which mattered since we visited four times. If Haleakalā is central to your trip, like it was ours, Upcountry is worth considering.

Do you need reservations for the Haleakalā sunrise?

Yes! This is the most time-sensitive booking on your entire Maui itinerary. Sunrise reservations open 60 days in advance at 7:00 am Hawaiian time and sell out within minutes. Set a reminder for exactly 60 days before your visit date and be at your computer ready to book. Missing this window essentially means missing the sunrise experience, since walk-up entry during sunrise hours is not permitted.

Is the Road to Hana worth it?

Honest answer: It depends on what you’re going for. The road itself is incredibly scenic but also relentlessly crowded, especially in the summer. We include it in this itinerary because the Pipiwai Trail and bamboo forest at the Kipahulu end are genuinely unmissable, and that part alone justifies the drive. If you’re expecting a peaceful scenic cruise, adjust your expectations. Leave as early as possible, be patient with traffic, and keep your focus on the destination rather than the journey.

How many times should you visit Haleakalā National Park?

At least twice. Once for the sunrise and once to hike the crater. But if you want our answer? We visited four times over seven days and would do it again. The summit district and the Kipahulu District are completely different experiences, and the Sliding Sands and Halemau’u trails are each worth a full day. Haleakalā is the heart of a Maui hiking itinerary and deserves more than a single half-day visit.

Is a 7 Day Maui Itinerary Worth It?

Our 7 days in Maui itinerary was jam-packed, but we wanted to see all that we could on this amazing trip to Maui. We loved every minute of our time here. Our favorite activities were definitely Haleakalā National Park and the amazing beaches.

If there is one thing we could have avoided, it would have been the Road to Hana. Yes, it’s beautiful, but beyond crowded. This was the only way we could hike the Pipiwai Trail, so we had to do it anyway. That being said, we would not hesitate to return to Maui for more fun!

After our week in Maui, we flew to Kauai and spent another week exploring this amazing island as well. This trip might look different for you, but we hope our 7 days in Maui itinerary will give you a solid foundation to plan an amazing trip of your own.
