- Parking is located just off the main road. There is a large lot here with plenty of spots. If it’s full, you can likely wait a few minutes for a spot to open up. This is usually a quick stop for most people visiting.
- At this location, you’ll also find restrooms and showers if you plan on spending some time at the beach. They were free when we visited.
- You can enjoy the beach here, but just know that it’s mostly rocky, so it might not be as comfortable as a sandy beach.

Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela
Known for the dramatic rock formations rising from the Atlantic Ocean, the islets are one of Madeira’s most photographed natural landmarks and a favorite stop for scenic coastal views, hiking, and photography.
The name “Ribeira da Janela” comes from the nearby river and village, famous for a unique rock opening that resembles a window.

Viewpoint of Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela

After parking your car in the parking lot, head up the stairs and through the short tunnel to the viewpoint for a nice panoramic view overlooking the ocean and islets. This is a great place for some photography! This is a short and scenic stop.

Visit the Beach

Next, head down the stairs at the viewpoint to reach the beach. We would caution against swimming at this location as the waves were very intense and powerful when we visited.
We sat on the rocks and enjoyed watching and listening to the power of the ocean. This is a nice, peaceful location to just sit and relax. It would be a great place for a picnic.
As you head back to the parking lot, look for the old road and tunnel if you want to explore a bit more. Additionally, across the river, you’ll see the hydroelectric power plant.

Tunnel: Optional
Walking through the tunnel will lead you to the old, narrow coastal road right along the cliffs. After exiting the tunnel, you’ll have some great views of the coastline of northern Madeira!
To get to the tunnel, walk up the hill from the parking lot toward the main road, and the tunnel will be on your left. You will see it up above the restrooms when facing the building.

Is A Visit to Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela Worth It?

Yes! We enjoyed our short visit here. The view of Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela from the overlook was very nice. After spending some time there, we headed down to the beach and watched the waves crash against the rocks. The ocean was a bit too strong to try to enjoy the water.
While visiting the northwest part of Madeira, we combined our visit with a trip to the Achadas da Cruz cable car. In full transparency, we also stopped in Porto Moniz and walked around, including a short visit to the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools.
Unfortunately, the weather was a bit too cold for a swim that morning, and it was cloudy and overcast. We headed to the Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela and then visited Seixal Beach afterward. This is a perfect quick stop while driving the coastal roads of northern Madeira.
