Safety and Weather in Golden Gate Bridge Natural Recreation Area
- Cell phone service was great here with proximity to San Francisco.
- Bring only what you need to the park. Leave valuables at home and be sure to secure your vehicle. Do not leave anything in sight within your car, or you may return to your vehicle with a broken window!
- Water: It’s recommended to carry at least 1 liter of water for every 5 miles you are hiking. Why carry a plastic or large water bottle when you could carry a water bladder?
- Food & Gas: Options can be found in nearby Sausalito, CA.
- Restrooms: There are restrooms located in and around the popular locations while visiting the Golden Gate Bridge National Recreation Area and Marin Headlands. Most of these are pit toilets with no running water.
- Weather: The Marin Headlands are located just north of San Francisco, and the weather can change fairly rapidly. Expect occasional rain and cool weather during the winter, beautiful weather and wildflowers in the spring, and potential foggy conditions in the summer. Fall comes in with perfect weather and is a great time to visit!

Animal Safety in Golden Gate Bridge Natural Recreation Area
- The Marin Headlands are home to a diverse group of animals. Some animals you might see in the park include coyotes, mountain lions, harbor seals, California sea lions, lizards, and snakes. Getting To Golden Gate Bridge Natural Recreation Area
Parking in the Marin Headlands was not a problem for us. There are popular areas with large parking lots and other areas up in the headlands that may have street parking or small lots. During peak times, these areas may fill up quickly as well. Note that when driving into the park on Bunker Road, you will encounter a one-way tunnel with a traffic light to control the flow of vehicles.
Additionally, after the parking area at Hawk Hill on Conzelman Road, traffic becomes one-way only and leads to Black Sands Beach and Point Bonita Lighthouse. Plan ahead so you don’t have to complete the driving loop multiple times.

Best Golden Gate Bridge Picture Spot
During our visit to this area, we stopped at multiple locations for pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge to see if we could find the best one! Here are our favorite locations with photos of the views you will see.
Battery Spencer Overlook

Hands down, this is the best Golden Gate Bridge Picture spot in the area! To get here, travel through the one-way tunnel on Bunker Road. Then, once you reach McCollough Road, take a left and go through the roundabout, taking the second exit to Conzelman Road – not the first exit! For a restroom stop, you will see a pit toilet located here near the roundabout.
Then, you will reach a small parking lot with spots for a few cars on the right. Park here for your first view of the bridge if you choose, but this is not the best Golden Gate Picture spot.

Keep driving, and you’ll reach another small lot. Again, feel free to park here, but better views await!
Finally! Park on the side of the road or in the lot near Battery Spencer. From the parking lot, a small walk between the parking lots and the bridge is all you have to conquer for the most awesome view of the Golden Gate Bridge!
This area will be crowded, so as soon as you see a spot to park, take it! Remember, this is a one-way road, so you can’t turn around and will have to drive all the way back through the one-way tunnel on Bunker Road to come back. Additionally, there are pit toilets here at Battery Spencer.
Fort Baker Fishing Pier

This next location is one of the best Golden Gate Bridge picture spots beneath the bridge! First, take Conzelman Road from Battery Spencer until you reach another turn-off to the right. Here, stay on Conzelman Road south toward the Golden Gate Bridge.
The road will lead you under the bridge and around to the other side, where it will become Moore Road. You will see the Fort Baker Fishing Pier on your right. Find a parking spot and walk out to see another great view of the bridge!
Near the Fort Baker Fishing Pier is the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which is a great location to take your kids. This is located just past the U.S. Coast Guard Station.
There you have it. Those are the best Golden Gate Bridge picture spots near the Marin Headlands. Continue reading to learn about short hikes and other scenic views at the Marin Headlands.

Hawk Hill
Next up, head back to Hawk Hill for a short hike and other great views. From the Fort Baker Fishing Pier, drive on Moore Road out to Bunker Road away from the bridge. (Moore Road turns into Bunker Road.) Then take the one-way tunnel again. Sound familiar? When you reach McCollough Road, turn left and drive back through the roundabout to the first exit on Conzelman Road.

Then, you will reach Hawk Hill, where you can park and walk around the old Battery 129. Walk through the tunnels and up the hills to explore this old military installation. There are some good views of the Golden Gate Bridge here, but nothing like the panoramic view at Battery Spencer.
Point Bonita Lighthouse – moderate – 1 mile, out and back
Finally, drive along the one-way Conzelman Road toward Point Bonita Lighthouse. This section of the road has amazing views as you descend the headlands. Along this route, you will come to Black Sands Beach, where there is a short and steep walk down to the beach and a small parking lot. This lot might be full as you drive by, but if not, you can take a quick (steep!) hike to the beach.

Eventually, you’ll drive past Battery Wallace, and the road will end at the Point Bonita YMCA. There are a few parking lots here, but please read all signage and make sure you are allowed to park your car here. Note that pets are not allowed on this particular trail.

Hike Down
Point Bonita is generally open on Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Note that access to the Point Bonita Lighthouse closes promptly at 3:20 pm. From the loop parking lot, walk the trail down toward the lighthouse.
This trail is fairly steep as it winds down to the tunnel below. Take in the spectacular views of the area as you venture down this path. You might even hear some seals or sea lions below. Along this trail are great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, but farther away.

Walk through the tunnel and out to the other side, where you’ll encounter a bridge to reach the lighthouse. This is a super fun adventure, and we loved it! The lighthouse was built in 1855 and is still active and in use today.

Other Things to Do
If you have enough time, we also recommend hiking the short Mendell Trail from the loop parking lot at Point Bonita. This will lead you to another battery, and if you keep walking, a spectacular overlook of Bird Island, Rodeo Beach, and the Point Bonita Lighthouse. This is a short quarter-mile walk.
Finally, visit the Nike Missile Site to learn about a Cold War-era defense system housed right here in the Marin Headlands. Missiles were intended to be a last desperate act of defense against bomb-carrying Soviet aircraft. If you want to visit, be sure to check the hours of operation here.

Final Thoughts
Our trip to the Golden Gate Bridge National Recreation Area and Marin Headlands was a great place to explore after our morning hike in Muir Woods. We really enjoyed each and every one of the views of the bridge and San Francisco. However, as you learned above, the best Golden Gate Bridge picture spot is definitely located at Battery Spencer!
Additionally, we really loved the hike to Point Bonita Lighthouse, so if you only have time for one hike, do this one. Just make sure you get there early before the tunnel closes, or you’ll be out of luck!
